From the comfort of a fast-fill bath tub and heated towel rails to the convenience of an iPod docking station, easily adjustable personal air conditioning and a selection of luxury toiletries, everything at Andaz Liverpool Street is in place for a perfect stay. A superb choice of restaurants and bars ensures all your culinary needs are met.
In addition to all this choice, Andaz Liverpool Street is currently offering wonderful themed afternoon teas to celebrate the upcoming Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Britain’s monarch celebrates 60 years on the throne this summer, and Andaz Liverpool Street will be laying on a clever themed tea each month until the big day.
Each tea commemorates one of the country’s queens throughout history, and will culminate in a grand tribute to the current queen as London and the whole country comes together to honour her in June. The themes will all feature the traditional sandwiches and scones, but with interesting twists.
February sees our first Queen, Mary I, remembered with a ‘Bloody Mary’ themed tea. A staunch Catholic, Mary had hundreds of Protestant opponents burned at the stake, leading them to give her this gruesome nickname. Many will also recognise it as the name of a famous cocktail of tomato juice and vodka, which will feature throughout the month.
The food will take on a Spanish theme, in honour of Mary’s husband, Prince Philippe II of Spain. Guests can sample Catalan cuisine such as chorizo and squid in pimento bread, Spanish tortillas and churros with chocolate and lemon saffron crème. The specialty tea will be Organic Rooibos.
March honours Elizabeth I with the ‘Virgin Queen’ tea, a label attached to the monarch on account of her never having married. One of her most famous acts was to sponsor Sir Walter Raleigh’s famed expeditions, which led to him reaching America.
This tea takes this American theme, and features mini burgers, hot dogs, and fish tacos. Those with a sweet tooth can indulge in delicious chocolate brownies and peanut butter cookies. The specialty tea throughout March is Organic Darjeeling.
In April, it is Queen Anne’s turn. Though she ruled for only twelve years, her time on the throne saw some highly significant events, among them the historic defeat of the French at the Battle of Blenheim and the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht. This ended the War of the Spanish Succession, and ensured Austria gained several Spanish territories, effectively saving it from collapse.
Consequently, April’s ‘Brandy Nan’ tea adopts an Austrian theme, featuring Sauerkraut, Fleschkase and apple strudel. Traditional English Breakfast tea is the beverage of choice this month.
The ‘Empress of India’ tea pays tribute to Queen Victoria in May. Among the many monumental events that occurred throughout her long reign (1837-1901), she was famously awarded the title of Empress of India in 1877, and so May’s tea enjoys an Indian theme.
Chicken tikka massala and cured curry salmon are just some of the spicy delights on offer, while sweet samosa with spiced mango is a tempting sweet option. Organic Assam is the tea of the month, while cocktails feature the famous Bombay Sapphire gin.
Finally, June welcomes the Diamond Jubilee in spectacular style with a marvellous ‘Diamond Queen’ tea in honour of our current queen. The theme here is quintessentially British, with food featuring coronation chicken, trout sandwiches and sweet corn fritters.
Pudding sees a traditional English trifle joined by indulgent millionaire shortbread, while the final themed tea is Earl Grey. The specialty cocktail features gin and Dubonnet, famously a known favourite of Her Majesty.
Each of these spectacular teas can be taken for just £45, and will be served Monday to Friday from 3pm until 4:30pm. Booking in advance is advised, and can be done so by email at london.restres@andaz.com or by phone on +44 (0)207 618 7000.
